Publisher's original green cloth, lettered in gilt on the spine, color pictorial dust jacket, lg 4to (12 x 8 1/2 inches). The author, William Entwisle, was probably the most important figure ever involved in the Poultry Fancy. He was responsible for introducing many new bantams taking the large fowl which existed and then, by ""scientific breeding"" he bantamised them. He also established a standard for each breed therefore laying the foundation for the modern day Poultry Club Standards (from the dust jacket flap). This is the ""Poultry Classic Reprint"" of the original work that was published in 1894. The illustrations are by J. W. Ludlow, one of the outstanding poultry artists of the Victorian era. Original printed gray wrappers, lettered in black on the spine and on the front cover, lg 8vo. A detailed study of poultry breeds and their production in the former Soviet Union. Translated from the original 1962 Russian edition into English by M. Fleishman et al. as part of the Israel Program for Scientific Translations. Ink stamp on the front wrapper of each volume reads ""Surplus Duplicate"" with the stamped dates of Feb. 13, 1969 and April 15, 1969. There are no other ownership marks. Light sunning to the spines of both volumes, some edge wear to the gray wrappers, the top front wrapper of volume 2 has an old crease along the top margin, some old cello tape along the top of the spine of volume 1, the text block of both volumes is bright, clean and unused; overall a very good copy..
